Umi ga totemo aoi

In a deserted town with a seaside view
A man runs a little bookshop
Sixty-five years old this year, he lives alone

He lost his wife too young
And raised his beloved daughter by himself
But last year she got married

Her husband's home was far away
And the man took his first plane to visit her

But it was too far and he was exhausted
And the food all tasted wrong
So in his heart he decided he'd never
Come here again alone
But he was sad

He got used to living alone
But his little bookshop saw few customers
And he spent all day just staring at the sea

Then one day his daughter suddenly said
Close the shop and come live with us

It was so sudden, he first got angry
And said no, I'll live here until the day I die
But his daughter's tears wore him down
Every day he worried over it
Saying, I'd like to stay here if I could

When he left the town, he said goodbye to his neighbors
And told them he'd be back soon
But after a while, the bookshop
Was torn down and turned into a parking lot
The sea is very blue
